Jet Airways to launch low-fare Jet Konnect

New Delhi, May 7 (IANS) Leading private carrier Jet Airways will launch a new economy service, ‘Jet Airways Konnect’, from Friday on select sectors, the airline announced Thursday.The company said in a regulatory statement that Jet Konnect would offer almost all services of the parent carrier and would help the airline cater to the needs of the consumers opting for low-fare services.

The only difference will be that Jet Konnect travellers will have to buy their meals on-board,’ the company said. Both Jet Airways and its low-cost carrier JetLite now offer food to their travellers on-board.

The ground and in-flight services of Jet Konnect will be handled by the airline employees, the statement said.

Initially, it will operate with two 737 and six ATR aircraft in sectors like Chennai-Coimbatore, Chennai-Madurai, Chennai-Kochi, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Bhopal, Mumbai-Udaipur, Bangalore-Pune and Bangalore-Mangalore.

‘Consumer demands are changing rapidly in a dynamic global environment. We believe Jet Airways Konnect service will give us the flexibility and speed to deploy capacity to meet these changing trends,’ Jet Airways chief commercial officer Sudheer Raghavan said.

The company late last month had slashed salaries of its senior employees as part of its cost-cutting measures to cope with the slowdown.

Jet Airways‘ market share in the first quarter of 2009 stood at 25.3 percent, while Kingfisher Airlines was ahead of it with 27.2 percent.

Jet Konnect flies low for now

MUMBAI: The country’s second-largest private airliner by passenger traffic Jet Airways launched another low-cost service called Jet Konnect.
However, market analysts expressed doubts if the move will help improve the fortunes of the carrier that is losing Rs 8 crore per day, as falling demand and excess capacity continue to dog the domestic aviation sector.

On Friday, as the service was launched, a company statement said Jet Konnect will complement Jet Airways’ full-service product. Jet is already present in the low-cost space with JetLite, the airliner it rebranded after it purchased from Sahara India. Travel industry representatives and market analysts ET spoke to felt the company could have expanded the coverage of JetLite, instead of launching another service. However, a Jet Airways official sought to refute this view saying the company doesn’t want to tamper with JetLite, which caters to 70 cities currently.

The response to the new service was lukewarm since the launch. “We thought that there would be a huge rush, but our data shows there have been no booking enquiries for Jet Konnect on the first three days,” said Travel Agents Association of India president Rajji Rai, who also runs Swiftravel, a travel agency. Other players in the low-cost segment said they were closely monitoring the Jet move.
“We have back-up plans and well-defined business model to take on competition at anytime,” said SpiceJet CEO Sanjay Aggarwal. A senior official from Paramount Airways, which offers business class at economy fares, said that it was not always low fares that pulls in passengers.On Thursday, Jet Airways chief commercial officer Sudheer Raghavan had said Jet Konnect will be offered to 38 destinations where Jet Airways flies.
Analysts from KPMG and PwC that ET spoke to questioned the relevance of launching a new service when Jet is losing Rs 8 crore every day, apart from having a debt burden of around Rs 15,000 crore. “Without any rebranding and aggressive marketing, it’s almost impossible to lure passengers in these turbulent times, when passenger load factor has been falling,” said a KPMG analyst who didn’t want to be named.

Jet Konnect to offer cheaper airfares

Mumbai: In a bid to cash in on summer vacation rush, Jet Airways will launch new no-frills service from Friday.

Called Jet Airways Konnect, the domestic private airline will provide 10-15 per cent cheaper airfare, connecting Mumbai with Bhopal, Udaipur and Ahmedabad.

The airline will also connect Chennai with Coimbatore, Madurai and Kochi and Bangalore with Pune and Mangalore.

“We are beginning operations of Jet Airways Konnect, our new all-economy, no-frills service, from tomorrow. The airfare will be 10-15 per cent lower on the new service compared to fares charged for our economy class,” Jet Airways, Chief Commercial Officer, Sudhir Raghavan told reporters in Mumbai.

Without giving details, he said that fares will be cheaper on some routes by 20 per cent. The Naresh Goyal-led airline will deploy two Boeing 737-800s and six smaller aircraft or ATRs. “There will be 58 flights on a daily basis across 19 routes,” he said.

Jet Airways Konnect will provide passengers with meals on payment from June 1.
